Hans-Dietrich Genscher's striking portrait finds a home at his alma mater

A striking portrait of Hans-Dietrich Genscher now has a permanent home at his former high school in Halle (Saale). The artwork, created by Halle-based photographer Knut Mueller, was officially handed over during a ceremony attended by school leaders and a close companion of the late politician. The piece will greet students daily, marking a lasting tribute to Genscher's legacy.

The portrait's journey began at the Dorint Hotel Halle before its donation by the Hans-Dietrich-Genscher-Stiftung and Ms. Hütten. Initially considered for the school's auditorium, logistical concerns led to its placement in the foyer—a spot where it will interact with students from their first day to graduation.

At the handover, Dr. Bertram Thieme, a longtime associate of Genscher, recounted personal stories and highlighted the statesman's crucial contributions to German reunification. The event also celebrated the school's 2014 renaming in Genscher's honour, reflecting his enduring ties to the institution since his 1946 Abitur. Mueller's artistic approach blended digital retouching, selective overpainting, and re-exposure to give the portrait a layered, almost three-dimensional effect. His connection to the building runs deep: he once attended the sports school that previously occupied the site. The foundation's ongoing collaboration with the school ensures Genscher's political and educational influence remains visible to future generations.

The portrait now stands as a daily reminder of Genscher's impact, both within the school and beyond. Its prominent position in the foyer ensures students will encounter it throughout their academic journey. The artwork's unique style and symbolic placement reinforce the school's commitment to preserving his memory.
