Halle's Teens Get Creative Shelters from Repurposed Concrete Pipes

A new crowdfunding campaign in Halle aims to create sheltered outdoor spaces for young people. Called Huts for Halle, the project will install seating tubes made from repurposed concrete pipes near Thüringer Bahnhof as a pilot. The initiative, backed by Bürgerstiftung Halle, seeks to improve local infrastructure while giving teens a place to gather without causing disturbances. The idea for the seating tubes, known as Sitzröhren, came from a group of young locals working with the dazwischenfunken team. Each unit will feature wooden benches and tables inside repurposed drainage pipes, offering a simple but effective shelter. The first pilot installation is planned near Thüringer Bahnhof.

The campaign has set a minimum funding target of €3,000. This will cover transport, precise placement, and the interior build-out of the seating tubes. If additional funds are raised, the organisers plan to add a green roof of succulents on top. This would help improve the local microclimate and create new habitats for insects and small plants. Bürgerstiftung Halle has not yet revealed how many more *Sitzröhren* could follow if the crowdfunding succeeds. However, the project is designed to benefit not just young people but also adults and the wider neighbourhood by enhancing public space quality.

The Huts for Halle campaign offers a low-cost way to repurpose materials while addressing community needs. If successful, the seating tubes could provide a model for similar projects across the city. The first installation at Thüringer Bahnhof will test the concept's practicality and popularity.
