Club collects over 50,000 euros for municipal bath - Halle’s 1916 Art Nouveau Baths Get a €27M Revival by 2028
Halle's historic Stadtbad public baths, an Art Nouveau landmark from 1916, is undergoing a major restoration. Work began in summer 2023, with completion expected by 2028. The project has sparked discussions among local officials, preservation groups, and residents about the building's future use—particularly the Ireland-Roman Bath section.
The renovation of the Stadtbad started in late June 2023, with a budget of around €27.3 million. The city of Halle (Saale), through its building department and cultural office, is overseeing the project. However, not every part of the building will be refurbished, as some areas remain excluded from the current plans.
Heritage conservation rules guide the restoration, ensuring the site's historical integrity. A local group, Friends of Halle Stadtbad, has already raised over €50,000 to protect the building's original murals. Their focus extends to the Ireland-Roman Bath, a section whose future use is still being debated by politicians and preservationists like the Deutsche Stiftung Denkmalschutz. While the group advocates for returning the landmark to its original function, official plans for repurposing the baths remain undecided. Discussions are ongoing as of late 2025, with the full restoration set to finish by 2028.
The Stadtbad's renovation will preserve a unique piece of German architectural history. The project's €27.3 million cost and partial refurbishment reflect a balance between conservation and modern needs. Once completed in 2028, the building's role—especially the Ireland-Roman Bath—will depend on the outcome of current debates.
