Guwahati's Rs 25-crore flood wall and green push transform urban living

Assam Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah recently launched a series of infrastructure projects across Guwahati. The initiatives, announced on June 21, 2024, include parks, flood defences, markets, and drainage systems aimed at improving urban living.

None of these projects were operational before the announcement date, marking a fresh push for development in the region.

Among the key projects, the redevelopment of Mahabir Chilarai Park in Amingaon was unveiled with an estimated cost of Rs 4.82 crore. The park will undergo beautification and upgrades to enhance public spaces.

The minister also laid the foundation for a new Assam State Housing Board headquarters at Ghoramara. This move aims to centralise administrative operations for better efficiency.

A major urban air improvement project was launched at Paschim Boragaon, near Deepor Beel. Covering around 40,000 square metres, it will use the Miyawaki plantation method to boost green cover. Meanwhile, the southern approach of the North Guwahati-South Guwahati bridge will see infrastructure improvements for smoother connectivity.

Flood management took centre stage with two critical projects. A stormwater drainage system in Boragaon, near Excelcare Hospital, was initiated to tackle waterlogging. Additionally, excavation work began across nearly 800 bighas at Silsako to ease flood-related challenges. A flood protection wall, costing Rs 25 crore, will stretch from PIBCO Point to Janata Bhawan.

The newly built Beltola Daily Market complex, constructed at Rs 11.5 crore, was also inaugurated. The facility is expected to serve local traders and residents with improved amenities.

These projects mark a significant investment in Guwahati's infrastructure. The developments focus on flood control, green spaces, and public facilities. Once completed, they are set to enhance urban resilience and quality of life in the city.
