Gütersloh commits long-term to sustainable transport with Zukunftsnetz Mobilität NRW
Gütersloh has renewed its membership with Zukunftsnetz Mobilität NRW on a permanent basis. The city first joined the network in 2022 and has since rolled out multiple projects to improve sustainable transport. Officials have praised the collaboration for helping shape local mobility solutions.
The network was founded in 2016 by North Rhine-Westphalia's state government. It brings together over 300 cities, towns, and districts to promote climate-neutral travel. Members receive expert advice and share knowledge on sustainable transport initiatives.
Since becoming part of the network, Gütersloh has launched five key projects. These include adding 12 kilometres of new bike paths and installing 50 extra e-bike charging stations. The city also introduced a bike-sharing scheme with 200 bicycles and dynamic traffic lights that give priority to cyclists and pedestrians. Additionally, a mobility app was developed to combine public transport and car-sharing options. Henning Matthes, Gütersloh's first deputy mayor, has highlighted the benefits of the partnership. The network's support has helped the city implement practical changes and exchange ideas with other members.
The indefinite extension ensures Gütersloh will continue working with Zukunftsnetz Mobilität NRW on future transport projects. The city's existing schemes—from bike lanes to smart traffic systems—will remain part of its long-term sustainability plans. Access to the network's resources and expertise will support further developments in local mobility.
