Greifswald Launches Two Major Green Projects by End of 2026

Greifswald is set to embark on two significant projects, both scheduled to commence in spring and conclude by the end of 2026. These initiatives, a circular path around Ellernholzteich and a revitalised hiking trail between Eldena and Friedrichshagen, will be primarily funded through the KfW program 'Natural Climate Protection in Municipalities', with the city of Greifswald covering the remaining 10%.

The circular path around Ellernholzteich, approximately 1.1 km in length, is budgeted at around 500,000 euros. It will be optimised for cyclists, featuring resting and barbecue areas, and will be supplemented with native trees and wildflowers. Meanwhile, the hiking trail between Eldena beach and Friedrichshagen, around 2.6 km long, is estimated to cost around 725,000 euros. This trail will include a wooden bridge, a small bridge, a bathing area, and a picnic area with a bird observation tower.

Both projects have received overwhelming support. The main committee of the Citizens' Assembly approved them, paving the way for construction work to be tendered in early 2026. Senator of Construction Achim Lerm expressed that these projects fulfill a long-standing wish of the population, inviting relaxation and nature enjoyment.

With construction slated to begin in spring and completion expected by the end of 2026, these projects promise to enhance Greifswald's green spaces. The city's commitment, along with the substantial funding from the KfW program, ensures these initiatives will become a reality, benefiting both residents and visitors alike.
