GM's PowerBank: Revolutionizing Home Energy Management with Solar Integration and EV Charging
General Motors (GM) has introduced the PowerBank stationary storage system, designed to provide backup power during outages or when vehicles are unavailable. The system, part of GM's new Energy ecosystem, integrates with both AC and DC solar arrays, allowing homeowners to harness renewable energy. It connects to the myGMC app for energy monitoring and mode switching.
The GM Energy system includes an inverter to convert stored direct current into usable alternating current for home appliances. It supports specific GM electric vehicles with Ultium platform-based bidirectional charging capabilities, enabling vehicles to power homes during outages. The system also features a home hub that isolates the house from the grid, allowing users to create a home depot for essential loads.
GM launched its Energy business unit in October 2024, with the first GM Energy products, including vehicle-to-home (V2H) charging bundles, becoming available in 2024. The PowerShift bidirectional charger can handle up to 19.2 kilowatts of alternating current.
GM's PowerBank stationary storage system is a significant step towards the next phase of EV ownership, where cars become integral parts of home energy management. The system's integration with solar arrays and GM electric vehicles demonstrates GM's commitment to renewable energy and sustainable living.
