Ghana MP Launches Dams and Irrigation Project to Empower Women Farmers

Hajia Fatahiya Abdul Aziz, MP for Savelugu Constituency, has launched a major irrigation and dam project to support women farmers. The initiative, led by the Yooyili Pag-Dede Foundation, aims to restore existing dams and build new ones in four communities. She believes the scheme will improve farming, raise incomes, and enhance living standards for families in the area.

The project will focus on rehabilitating the Libga Dam Cluster, which currently struggles with water shortages during dry seasons. Plans include de-silting, reinforcing embankments, and adding silt traps to increase storage capacity. These upgrades will help over 5,000 women farmers who rely on the dam for irrigation.

New dams will also be constructed in Diare, Tibali, Damdu, and Pigu to expand water access and ease pressure on existing systems. The designs will feature safe, accessible water points tailored for women, ensuring the infrastructure meets their needs. The initiative forms part of the foundation's wider goals, which include women's empowerment, education, and clean water access. However, the MP has stressed that its success hinges on securing partnerships and funding from stakeholders.

If completed, the project will enable year-round farming and reduce water scarcity for women in the constituency. The restored and new dams are expected to provide a steady water supply, directly benefiting agricultural productivity. The foundation continues to seek support to turn these plans into reality.
