Since 2001, the Marathon Man at City Hall - Germany’s marathon mayor plans to lead Wangen im Allgäu until 2033

Michael Lang has served as mayor of Wangen im Allgäu since 2001. His time in office spans over two decades, beginning when Germany still used the Deutschmark and George W. Bush was US president. Now, he plans to remain in the role until 2033—marking 32 years of leadership.

Lang took over from long-serving mayor Michael Neumann in 2001. He often describes his jobs as a marathon, a comparison shaped by his own experience—he has completed nine marathons in his life. His workweek is packed with 30 to 40 appointments, starting at 9 a.m. and ending only when his tasks are done.

In 2016, a dog bite triggered severe sleep problems, leaving him worried he might have to resign. Despite this setback, he continued his duties. His approach to leadership is hands-on, expecting employees to match his long hours and commitment. After winning re-election in 2021, Lang began his fourth term in 2022. This eight-year mandate extends his tenure well into the future, reinforcing his dedication to the town.

Lang’s leadership has already lasted over 20 years, with another decade planned ahead. His demanding schedule and resilience reflect his view of the jobs as an endurance challenge. The mayor shows no signs of slowing down, aiming to serve Wangen im Allgäu until at least 2033.
