Germany's 'Camino Adorf' merges solar power with organic farming in bold agri-solar project
A new agri-solar park named 'Camino Adorf' is set to transform a 15.8-hectare site in Neukirchen, within the Ore Mountains. The project blends renewable energy with farming, using vertical solar panels to grow organic meadow grass. This grass will feed horses at a nearby equestrian centre in Adorf while generating clean electricity for local homes. The initiative takes its name from the Saxon Way of St. James, a historic pilgrimage route linked to the Camino de Santiago. A farm close to the solar park already serves as a hostel and stamp station for pilgrims, reinforcing the connection.
Next2Sun, the company behind the project, has launched a crowdfunding campaign to fund construction. Local residents can invest directly, earning bonus payments while supporting sustainable energy. The design ensures the land remains fully usable for agriculture, with organic meadow grass grown beneath the panels.
Once complete, the park will produce around 6,200 megawatt-hours of electricity each year. This output could power roughly 1,900 households, making it one of eastern Germany's largest agri-solar installations. The 'Camino Adorf' project combines solar power with farming, maintaining food production while boosting renewable energy. Local investors will share in its financial benefits, and the park will contribute to the region's green energy supply. Construction is expected to proceed following the crowdfunding phase.
