Eder to Make New Push for Reusable Containers for Takeout Food - Germany’s bold plan to reuse food containers and meet EU recycling goals
Environment Minister Katrin Eder, from Rhineland-Palatinate, has sounded the alarm on EU recycling targets. She warns that significant increases are due in 2030 and 2040. Eder has proposed solutions to improve the current system for reusable packaging in takeaway food, which is not meeting expectations.
Eder has drafted a resolution for the Environmental Ministers’ Conference. She urges the federal government to enforce reusable packaging mandates in hospitality and retail. Currently, small food service businesses struggle to set up their own systems.
Eder proposed repurposing bottle deposit machines for reusable food containers. This would create a nationwide return infrastructure, making it more convenient for consumers. She stressed that businesses should not face additional financial burdens accepting third-party containers.
Eder's proposals aim to pressure the federal government into more effectively implementing the mandatory reusable packaging rules. She believes this will help meet EU recycling targets. The conversion of bottle return machines could significantly improve the return infrastructure, benefiting both consumers and businesses.
