Germany's blueberry boom: How 1,000 hectares transformed the industry in a decade
Blueberry farming in Germany has expanded rapidly over the past decade. Between 2016 and 2025, the area used for commercial cultivation grew from around 200 hectares to over 1,000 hectares. Annual production also surged, rising from roughly 1,500 tonnes to more than 10,000 tonnes as demand increased and investments flowed into southern and eastern regions.
Growing blueberries successfully requires specific conditions. The plants thrive in acidic soil with a pH of 4.0 to 5.0, which can be achieved by mixing in acidic peat, decomposed pine needles, or sawdust with compost. They also need full sunlight and shelter from cold winds to develop properly.
Watering is another key factor. Throughout the growing season, blueberries must receive regular irrigation with acidified water. Mulching with aged sawdust helps retain moisture, keeps soil temperatures stable, and improves light exposure for the bushes. High groundwater levels can harm the plants, so raised beds are recommended in wet areas.
The harvest season for blueberries is long, stretching from mid-July to September, thanks to their gradual ripening. Early varieties are ready by mid-July, mid-season types ripen from late July to mid-August, and late varieties mature in the second half of August. However, in cooler climates, late varieties may not fully ripen before early frosts, making mid-season types a more reliable choice.
Germany's blueberry industry has seen significant growth, driven by higher demand and targeted investments. The crop's success depends on careful soil management, proper watering, and protection from harsh weather. With the right conditions, blueberries can yield a steady harvest over several months each year.
