Gergei Erdei’s ‘Objects of Desire’ Blends Baroque Drama with Modern Craftsmanship

Hungarian artist and designer Gergei Erdei has collaborated with British lighting and furniture company Porta Romana to create a stunning collection of six made-to-order pieces. The collection, titled 'Objects of Desire', marries Porta Romana's expertise in decorative, hand-painted finishes with Erdei's love for excess and attention to detail. Before launching his interior decor brand, Erdei honed his skills as a womenswear and embroidery designer for Gucci in Rome. His inspiration for the 'Objects of Desire' collection stems from the eclectic furniture in his grandparents' home in Budapest. The Teatro wall light and theatrical console are standout pieces, featuring sculpted swags, creased paper shades, and elegant folds that evoke the grandeur of a stage. To achieve the intricate details in Erdei's designs, Porta Romana had to develop special tools. For instance, a metal roller was created to indent the surface of the Tiberio mirror. The collection also boasts bespoke painted finishes, such as Gilted New Bronze, Gilted Verdigris, and Anziano White, which add to its luxurious appeal. Each piece draws from antiquity, mythology, and art deco, seductively recasting historic references for a contemporary audience. The 'Objects of Desire' collection is a testament to the shared appreciation for craftsmanship between Erdei and Porta Romana's co-founder and creative director, Andrew Hills. The six made-to-order pieces are now part of Erdei's 'Objects of Desire' line of collectables, offering a unique blend of historic inspiration and modern elegance.
