Gas Announcement: A Guide for Customers

Moving House? Here's How to Transfer Your Gas Supply Smoothly

Moving to a new home is an exciting time, but it can also come with its fair share of challenges. One such challenge is ensuring a seamless transition of your gas supply. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you navigate this process:

Advance Planning

Contact your gas supplier at least three weeks before moving to schedule the cut-off at your old property and activation at your new property. This helps avoid any loss of service or overlap.

Provide Necessary Details

When contacting your gas supplier, be ready to provide details such as your move-in date, new address, Meter Point Reference Number (MPRN) or equivalent identification to locate your gas supply for switching or transferring.

Record Meter Readings

Before leaving your old home, take a gas meter reading and provide it to the supplier to ensure correct final billing and establish your starting usage at the new home by reading the new meter on moving in.

Handling Previous Tenant’s Non-Deregistration

If you find that the prior occupant has not closed their account, notify the gas supplier promptly so they can resolve the overlap either by transferring or opening a fresh account under your name. This prevents disputes or mischarges.

Paying Outstanding Balances and Inquiring About Deposits

Make sure any deposits or outstanding balances are settled with your old supplier to get refunds or avoid being held responsible for others’ usage.

Switching Suppliers (if desired)

If you wish to switch to a new gas supplier, you can do so by providing your MPRN and usage information. Your new supplier will coordinate the switch with the old one, usually completing within five working days without supply interruption.

Initiating a Forced Deregistration

If the previous tenant failed to deregister gas and a new tenant moves in, a forced deregistration may be necessary. To initiate this, you must prove that you now live in the property.

Transferring to the Same Supplier

It's possible to transfer the gas service to the same supplier, such as E.ON, when moving or buying a new property.

Filling Out the Form

To facilitate the process, you'll need to fill out an online form, which requires an internet connection.

Proof of Residency

A rental agreement can often serve as proof for the new tenant.

Locating the Gas Meter

The gas meter is typically located in the basement or staircase. The meter number is displayed in large numbers on the front of the gas meter.

Cancelling the Current Contract

When buying a house, cancelling the current gas contract and setting up a new one for the new property is necessary.

Selecting Your Preferred Supplier

Interested parties can select their preferred supplier through online services. Customers usually use online forms for this purpose.

By following these steps, you can ensure a smooth gas supply transition between residences, prevent billing errors, and avoid service interruptions during your move.

  • Moving to a new home can also involve changing your gas supplier, if desired, to match your preferred lifestyle and home-and-garden needs.
  • It's important to keep in mind that when switching suppliers, the process should be completed well in advance, and necessary details such as your new address, MPRN, and usage information will be required.
