Gardener Monty Don to create a dog-focused garden for the RHS Chelsea Flower Show in 2025
Monty Don's RHS and Radio 2 Dog Garden at the Chelsea Flower Show 2025
Monty Don, a regular presenter of BBC Gardeners' World and Chelsea Flower Show coverage, is set to make his debut at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show with a unique garden design. The RHS and Radio 2 Dog Garden, a collaboration with BBC Radio 2, will be his first Chelsea show garden, designed specifically with the needs of dogs in mind.
The garden, part of the RHS's 'Your Space, Your Story' initiative, aims to be both beautiful and practical for dogs' comfort and play. It features dog-friendly elements such as a lawn, water areas for wallowing, and shade-providing trees. Her Majesty The Queen's adopted Jack Russell Terriers, Beth and Bluebell, will also be featured on the path, along with the names of dogs belonging to Radio 2 presenters, RHS ambassadors, and Monty Don's beloved dog Ned.
Clare Matterson, RHS director general, is excited about creating a garden that celebrates the connection between dogs and gardens. The garden is inspired by the nation's love of dogs and will help dog lovers at home to create garden spaces for their pets. There will be an area for humans to enjoy plants, and another area for dogs to visit supervised, raising awareness of toxic plants for pets.
Radio 2 presenter Jo Whiley will champion the garden on her show and create a doggy playlist that will be played during the Chelsea Flower Show in 2025. Following the show, the entire garden will be relocated to Battersea Dogs & Cats Home, where it will continue to serve as a joyful space for rescued dogs.
Monty Don's work on the garden is a reflection of his own love of dogs, with his canine friends often appearing in his Gardeners' World broadcasts. The project, which has brought considerable attention as a unique and meaningful garden focused on animal welfare within the context of the prestigious Chelsea Flower Show, is a testament to Monty Don's dedication to creating spaces that are both aesthetically pleasing and functional for all creatures.
The RHS and Radio 2 Dog Garden will be created in collaboration with horticulturist Jamie Butterworth and his team at Form Plants. The garden is just one example of the RHS's new 'Your Space, Your Story' initiative, which champions the initiatives of all gardeners.
