FS Group to Launch Eurotunnel Trains Between UK and France by 2026

FS Group has announced plans to launch Eurotunnel services between the UK and France from 31 March 2026. The Italian rail operator, backed by US private equity firm Certares, is pushing ahead with a €1-billion investment to challenge existing providers.

The move follows an earlier setback when the UK’s Office of Road and Rail (ORR) initially awarded key routes to Virgin instead of FS Group. Now, the company is aiming to reshape cross-Channel travel with faster, greener alternatives to air and road transport.

FS Group’s strategy centres on expanding its high-speed Trenitalia France services. A €300 million maintenance depot in Paris will support the fleet, housing 10 new trains. This setup will reduce the need for overnight storage in London, allowing just one train to remain there for early departures.

The company plans to increase its Paris-Lyon timetable to 28 daily services, adding at least 19 new trains. A key target is the 35% to 40% of London-Paris travellers who currently fly. By offering more frequent, high-speed rail options, FS Group hopes to shift business passengers away from planes.

Funding for the project comes from a partnership with Certares, which will tap into its existing investment portfolio. The €1-billion plan covers fleet upgrades and infrastructure, positioning the venture as a long-term competitor in European rail. FS Group has framed the project as a model for sustainable transport, aiming to cut emissions by reducing short-haul flights.

The official confirmation came in December 2025, setting the start date for services in early 2026. If successful, the expansion could redefine travel between the UK and mainland Europe within three years.

FS Group’s entry into the Eurotunnel market will introduce new competition for cross-Channel routes. With a focus on high-speed rail and reduced reliance on air travel, the company expects to attract a significant share of business passengers.

The €1-billion investment, backed by Certares, will fund fleet growth and infrastructure improvements. If the plans proceed as scheduled, travellers could see expanded services from March 2026 onward.
