Freiburg’s Rathausgasse to Close for Major Renovation in 2026–2027
Freiburg’s Rathausgasse will undergo a major renovation from January 2026 to October 2027. The project will modernise the alley’s infrastructure, improve accessibility, and add greenery. Both the city administration and badenovaNETZE will lead the work, with funding supported by federal, state, and local sources.
Construction begins on January 12, 2026, starting near Rotteckring. The work will progress in stages to reduce disruption for residents and visitors. During this time, the alley will stay open for pedestrians but close to vehicles.
The renovation will transform Rathausgasse with modern infrastructure, better accessibility standards, and more green spaces. Work will span nearly two years, with staggered phases to limit inconvenience. Once complete, the alley will feature updated utilities, a refreshed surface, and enhanced pedestrian access.
