Freiburg's Knopfhäusle blends heritage, climate action and affordable living in bold renovation

Freiburg's historic Knopfhäusle settlement is undergoing a major renovation to balance heritage preservation, climate goals, and affordable housing. The project, led by Stadtimmobilien Freiburg GmbH, has already reduced energy use by 45 percent while keeping rents below the city's average. The Knopfhäusle neighbourhood, located in eastern Freiburg, is one of the city's most culturally significant areas. Modernisation work began years ago, with the first upgraded homes reoccupied by tenants in 2022 and 2023.

The third phase, centred on the Meisterhäuser buildings, is now almost finished. Meanwhile, the fourth and final stage is set to run until late 2026. Once complete, around 100 refurbished apartments will be available at below-market rents. In 2025, the initiative earned national recognition by winning a funding award. On March 27, 2026, Stadtimmobilien Freiburg GmbH provided an update on the project's progress, highlighting its success in cutting energy consumption by nearly half.

The renovation will deliver 100 modernised flats by the end of 2026. Tenants will benefit from lower rents and improved energy efficiency. The project's blend of heritage, sustainability, and affordability has already gained national attention.
