Freiburger Stadtbau earns dual nominations for 2026 German Architecture Award
Freiburg's municipal housing developer, Freiburger Stadtbau (FSB), has secured two nominations in the final round of the 2026 German Architecture Award. According to the company, both the modular timber housing project on Bergäckerstraße and the renovation of the buildings at Elsässer Straße 2f and 2g have been shortlisted.
The Bergäckerstraße neighborhood project is competing in the "Simple Construction" category. Using serial modular timber construction, four three-story buildings were erected, providing 33 residential units along with approximately 300 square meters of office, social, and communal space. FSB reports that the development meets the KfW Efficiency House 40 EE standard, combining photovoltaic systems with green roofs and facades.
In the "Building in Existing Structures" category, the renovation of the Elsässer Straße 2f and 2g buildings in the Breisacher Hof complex has been nominated. These heritage-listed, imperial-era structures are undergoing comprehensive modernization under the "Social Cohesion" urban development program, with energy efficiency upgrades to meet the KfW-85 standard. FSB states that the number of apartments will increase from 52 to 56 while maintaining affordable rents.
The German Architecture Award is presented annually under the patronage of the Federal Ministry for Housing, Urban Development, and Building. The winners will be announced on March 24 during the digitalBAU trade fair in Cologne.
