Freiburg Unveils Groundbreaking Barrier-Free Transport Hub at Bissierstraße

Freiburg has opened a new model transport hub at Bissierstraße, designed to set higher accessibility standards. The project took a year to complete and was officially unveiled on March 20, 2026. It marks the city's first major barrier-free upgrade in at least five years.

Construction began in March 2025, with a total investment of around €2 million. Most of the funding came from the state of Baden-Württemberg, while an extra €860,000 covered civil engineering and traffic light improvements.

The hub now features a continuous tactile guidance system, audible traffic signals, and fully accessible crossings. These upgrades ensure easier navigation for people with disabilities. Disability advocacy groups played a key role in shaping the design. As a vital mobility point, Bissierstraße connects multiple bus routes and tram line 3. It also includes a bike-sharing station and electric bus charging infrastructure. The project was a collaboration between VAG Freiburg and the city's Department of Gardens and Civil Engineering. Stakeholders have praised the hub as a successful example of barrier-free urban development. However, no other transport hubs in Freiburg have received similar upgrades since 2021.

The Bissierstraße project sets a new benchmark for accessibility in Freiburg. Further work will be needed to bring the rest of the city up to the same standard. For now, the hub stands as the only major barrier-free transport upgrade in recent years.
