Freiburg Celebrates World Water Day with a Unique River Adventure
Freiburg will mark World Water Day with a free, interactive event on Saturday, March 21. Starting at 1 p.m., visitors can explore the Dreisam River's ecosystem through hands-on activities. The gathering is the only one of its kind in Germany on that date.
The event runs along the Dreisam River, close to Café Extrablatt on Schreiberstraße. Organisers Bachpaten Freiburg and Dreisam River Guides have planned a mix of games and learning stations. Attendees can try their hand at river-themed puzzles or test their skills in a 'fishing on land' challenge.
Under microscopes, participants will get a close-up look at aquatic creatures living in the river. The activities aim to highlight the importance of local water habitats and their wildlife. No sign-up is needed, and all are welcome to drop in. Unlike other German cities, Freiburg's event stands alone on March 21, as similar projects elsewhere are scheduled for 2026 or later.
The afternoon offers a chance to learn about the Dreisam's ecosystem in a fun, practical way. With no registration required, the event invites everyone to discover the river's hidden life. Organisers hope it will raise awareness of local water conservation efforts.
