Freiburg and Tel Aviv Celebrate a Decade of Cultural Bonds Through Photography
Freiburg is celebrating a decade of friendship with Tel Aviv this month. To commemorate, a photography exhibition titled Lviv – Tel Aviv will display daily life in both cities. The event emphasizes the cultural connections built since the sister-city partnership began in 2013.
The exhibition is a collaborative effort by the Freiburg–Tel Aviv Friendship Association and Kommunales Kino Freiburg. It combines images from Tel Aviv and Lviv, providing a glimpse into the urban life of each location. Visitors can explore the contrasts and similarities between the two cities through the lens of local photographers.
Over the past ten years, the partnership has evolved beyond symbolism into active collaboration. Cultural exchanges like the 2022 Bridges of Culture festival and joint art exhibitions have become regular occurrences. Economic ties have also strengthened, including a 2024 tech startup exchange designed to foster innovation between the two cities. Political engagement has played a role as well, with twin city youth forums in 2019 and 2025 focusing on sustainability and peace-building.
The celebration begins on February 28, 2023, with an opening reception at 7:00 PM. The event will be held at the Kommunales Kino cinema on Urachstraße, setting the stage for the exhibition's public viewing.
The Lviv – Tel Aviv exhibition runs as part of the anniversary festivities. It underscores how cultural, economic, and political exchanges have shaped the relationship between Freiburg and Tel Aviv. The opening reception marks the start of a program reflecting on a decade of shared projects and future cooperation.
