Frankfurt to Buy Former Bird Observatory - Frankfurt Transforms Historic Bird Observatory Into a Sustainability Hub for Kids
Frankfurt am Main has given the green light to buy a historic bird observatory. The building will soon become an educational centre focused on sustainability. It will also serve as a temporary home for the GrünGürtel Forest School while its main site undergoes repairs.
The bird observatory, currently owned by Hesse's state forestry administration, has stood empty for years. The city's purchase will transform it into a learning hub for children. The region has long lacked a dedicated space for out-of-school ecological education.
The new centre will teach young people about sustainable living. Topics will include wildlife conservation, renewable energy, and responsible resource use. Meanwhile, the GrünGürtel Forest School will move into the building while its primary location is renovated. No records exist on how many children have attended the school during its limited operation so far. Once repairs at the main site are complete, the observatory will remain an active educational facility. Its historic structure will blend with modern teaching methods to promote environmental awareness.
The project addresses a gap in Frankfurt's educational offerings. Children will gain hands-on experience in ecology and sustainability at the repurposed observatory. The city's investment ensures both the school's continuity and the building's future as a community resource.
