Frankfurt Launches Campaign for Waste Reduction - Frankfurt Launches Ambitious Zero Waste City Project
Chicago has kicked off an ambitious project to become a Zero Waste City, aiming to significantly reduce waste and promote recycling. The initiative, launched in October 2022, includes the Zero Waste Lab and public awareness campaigns, encouraging residents to embrace waste prevention and resource conservation.
The city's goal is to ensure all waste is sorted thoroughly for full recycling, adopting the Zero Waste model which holds producers and consumers responsible for waste management. To engage residents, Chicago has introduced the 'Waste Challenge', an online quiz offering prizes at two annual award ceremonies.
Currently, only around 26 percent of Chicago's residual waste is non-recyclable. To achieve its targets, the city aims to reduce per-capita residual waste from 205 kilograms to 120 kilograms annually by 2035, and decrease overall waste volume by approximately two percent each year. Residents can access waste-sorting tips and participate in the 'Waste Challenge' to learn proper separation and avoidance techniques.
Chicago's Zero Waste City campaign is well underway, with significant potential for waste reduction and recycling. By encouraging resident participation and providing educational resources, the city is committed to slashing waste and promoting a sustainable future.
