Frankfurt Couple Transforms Historic Home into Urban Oasis with Rooftop Garden

Robert and Patricia Volhard have transformed their family home in Frankfurt's Westend into a unique living space. The couple, who have resided there for 18 years, chose an 'architectural liberation' over a simple renovation, resulting in a stunning Gründerzeit house with a rooftop garden offering views of the city skyline and a touch of Tuscany.

The Volhards, including lawyer Robert who commutes between Frankfurt, Paris, and London, worked with various professionals to achieve their vision. Munich studio Holzrausch designed the interior, blending materials and embracing patina. Architect Peter Begon from B.A.S. Architekten handled the renovation, replacing the old roof with an open construction and creating the green rooftop landscape. The couple also collaborated with the architectural firm FRAUD for the project.

The apartment features a small study with a desk, providing a private, secluded workspace with a view of greenery. The architects advocated for a generous floor plan, incorporating a stainless steel kitchen block and a hidden staircase made of Rabitz. The Volhards, who inherited the house from Robert's parents in the 1970s, decided against a banal renovation, instead choosing to celebrate the home's history and create a modern, inviting space.

The Volhards' parental home in Frankfurt now boasts a rooftop garden, offering a unique blend of urban and rural views. The renovation, carried out by a team of skilled architects and designers, has transformed the Gründerzeit house into a modern, comfortable living space that reflects the couple's personal style and appreciation for both history and innovation.
