Former Google CEO spends $110 million on a Los Angeles mansion, larger than the Taj Mahal in size.
Tech Mogul Eric Schmidt Acquires Iconic Spelling Manor for $110 Million
The legendary Spelling Manor, a symbol of Hollywood glamour and home to several iconic TV shows, has found a new owner. Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt has purchased the property, located at 594 S Mapleton Drive in Beverly Hills, for $110 million.
Originally built for TV producer Aaron Spelling in the 1990s, the mansion was home to shows such as 'Charlie's Angels', Beverly Hill 90210, and Charmed. After Spelling's demise, his widow, Candy Spelling, became the owner. In 2011, the home was sold to British heiress Petra Ecclestone for a reported $120 million.
The Manor, spanning approximately 56,500 sq-ft and covering around 5 acres of land, features 14 bedrooms and 27 baths. It boasts a two-lane bowling alley, wine cellar, beauty salon with massage and tanning rooms, and a central screening room with a 60-ft screen that drops into the floor, seating 20 people comfortably. The property also includes a swimming pool adorned with 170,000 glass tiles and a tennis court.
The Schmidts, who have a net worth of $25.5 billion, have named their newly acquired property "594." They plan to remodel the house to maximize its energy efficiency. The remodelled Manor will primarily serve as a venue for meetings and gatherings tied to LA nonprofits and cultural institutions.
The sale of the Manor ties for the "priciest deal" of the year in the Los Angeles real estate market. The Schmidts managed to secure the property at a significant discount from its initial asking price of $137.5 million.
The Beverly Hills-based real estate agency that facilitated the deal also brokered the May sale of 630 Nimes Road in Bel-Air. With this acquisition, the Schmidts have added another iconic property to their portfolio, joining the ranks of Hollywood's most prestigious homeowners.
According to a house tour by Architectural Digest, the Manor's screening room is one of its significant highlights. The Manor's rich history and opulent amenities make it a coveted piece of real estate in the heart of Beverly Hills.
