Florence partners with EIB to launch affordable housing and climate-friendly urban plan

The European Investment Bank (EIB) will assist Florence in creating a new affordable housing programme. The initiative aims to provide more rental homes at reasonable rates for struggling households. Technical support from the EIB will also focus on climate-friendly urban development. The Municipality of Florence plans to increase its stock of social housing by repurposing municipal properties. The first site identified for development is the former Lupi di Toscana barracks, where two clusters of housing will be built.

The EIB's advisory team will evaluate the technical, economic, and financial viability of the project. Their assessment will consider how to blend municipal funds with potential EIB loans to ensure long-term sustainability.

This support aligns with the city's Abitare Firenze plan and broader climate goals. The EIB will help structure a programme that is both bankable and in line with sustainable urban growth strategies. The collaboration between Florence and the EIB will focus on expanding affordable housing while meeting climate targets. A detailed feasibility study will guide the use of public assets and funding options. The first phase of development is set to begin at the former barracks site.
