Fishermen's Mission reaches out to struggling Channel Islands communities

A representative from The Fishermen's Mission will visit Alderney and Guernsey this April. Hayley Hamlett, the charity's area representative, will meet with local fishing communities to outline the support available. This marks her first successful trip to Alderney after bad weather disrupted plans last year.

The charity provides emotional, practical, and financial help to fishermen, their families, and widows. Support includes grants for household appliances, education costs, debt relief, and tailored assistance for living expenses. Former fishermen and those still working in the industry can access these services.

Hamlett will give a short presentation in Alderney to explain the charity's work. The Fishermen's Mission has encouraged fishermen, their families, and widows to attend and learn about the available help. After her visit to Alderney, she will return to Guernsey, where she will be based at The Guernsey Yacht Club.

The visits come at a time when local fishing has declined sharply. Alderney's last commercial fishing vessel was sold last year, while Guernsey has seen its number of professional fishermen drop by more than half in under a decade.

Hamlett's trip aims to raise awareness of the charity's services among struggling fishing communities. The Fishermen's Mission continues to offer direct support to those affected by the industry's challenges. No official figures on active fishermen in Guernsey for 2013 or later years were available.
