Emilia and Noah remain the hottest baby names in North Rhine-Westphalia, according to the German Language Society (GfdS) analysis for the year 2024. These names were also parents' top picks in 2023.

On a national scale, Noah holds the top spot for boys, while Sophia reigns supreme among the girls in Germany. Interestingly, regional differences in name preferences exist. For instance, Saxony favors Mia and Emil.

"Parents love names that are easy on the ears," remarked GfdS director, Andrea Ewels, based in Wiesbaden. She added, "Names like Noah, Sophia, Emilia, Luca, and Sophia have a pleasing sound and are typically short, easy to pronounce, and internationally understood. They strike a balance between familiarity, modernity, and timelessness – qualities many parents appreciate."

In NRW, Sophia follows Emilia as the second most popular name for girls, with variations like Sophia, Sophiyah, and Sofia also making the list. For boys, Noah, Matheo, Mohammed, and Mohamed are the top choices in NRW (accounting for different spellings).

Since 1977, the GfdS has published an annual list of commonly given names, collating data from over 750 registration offices across Germany. This year, almost 900,000 individual names were recorded, accounting for nearly 92% of all given names in Germany.
