Film archive launches its own movie theater
The Cinémathèque association, a well-known cultural institution in Leipzig, is set to open its own cinema on Monday, located at Karl-Liebknecht-Straße 109. This new addition to the city's cultural landscape will offer an educational program that includes original version films (OV), film discussions, and exhibitions.
Before the grand opening, the Cinémathèque association presented its program at the NATO. Now, with its own cinema, the association plans to host themed events in the future, combining curated film screenings with thematic events such as film series tied to exhibitions and sociocultural topics. These events will foster deeper engagement through post-film talks with experts.
For instance, the cinema will host film screenings related to ongoing art exhibitions like "Family Matters" at MdbK Leipzig, accompanied by discussions with sociologists and writers. The thematically focused events at Cinémathèque often explore cultural, social, and political themes via film series and supplementary formats.
The new cinema will feature a screening room seating 30 people and an exhibition space available for public viewing. The educational program for the new cinema, as planned by the Cinémathèque association, is yet to be announced.
It's worth noting that the Cinémathèque association organises the summer cinema at Conne Island and the Moritzbastei every year. These popular events will continue alongside the new cinema. The program shown at other venues will also be screened at the new cinema.
The Cinémathèque association's new cinema is a welcome addition to Leipzig's cultural scene, promoting original-language screenings and discourse, and positioning itself as a cultural and educational film institution. The venue actively encourages conversation and analysis around the films shown, making it an exciting destination for film enthusiasts and those interested in sociocultural topics.
