Farming for the Future: Simon Cutter's Sustainable Food Revolution

Simon Cutter, a pioneer in sustainable farming, was recognised for his exceptional practices at the Good Farm Animal Welfare Awards 2019. The awards ceremony, held on July 29, 2019, celebrated 50 market-leading food businesses that prioritise animal welfare and environmental sustainability.

During the event, Compassion in World Farming's chief executive, Philip Lymbery, presented Cutter with the Sustainable Food and Farming Award. Cutter's farm, located at Alscot, produces Hereford beef and lamb from Easycare ewes, all certified 'Pasture for Life'.

Lymbery praised Cutter's farming methods, stating that they deliver healthy food and higher animal welfare. Cutter's focus on a low-input, low-cost organic system aims to reduce reliance on synthetic inputs, promote regenerative farming, and improve soil health and biodiversity.

The demand for 100% grass-fed meat from consumers is driving Cutter's farming system. On his farm, cows and sheep encourage the growth of wildflowers and wildlife, contributing to a thriving landscape. This approach aligns with the Pasture-fed Livestock Association's mission to champion the production of meat and dairy from 100% grass and pasture, with no grains at all.

As the Director of Pasture for Life, Cutter promotes 100% pasture-fed livestock systems aimed at improving sustainability and nutritional quality. Research suggests that grass-fed meat has superior nutrient profiles, with lower total fat and saturated fat content, more omega 3's, more vitamins and minerals, and a delicious taste.

Cutter's farm is a testament to the benefits of sustainable farming. His efforts in revitalising the countryside on his estate have led to flourishing wildlife, such as waterfowl and birds of prey. Biodiversity surveys and nature recovery efforts on his farm indicate the health of the ecosystem.
