Famous Artist Transforms Daycare with Children’s Vibrant Fabric Creations
At the end of 2025, children at the Sonnenkafer daycare centre took part in a creative project led by a local famous artist. The initiative, called An Artist for Every Daycare, brought colourful designs to life on large fabric, creating a vibrant display. The finished pieces now brighten the centre as a permanent display.
The project revolved around the theme Shapes and Colors. Over several weeks, the children experimented with mixing paints and stamping geometric shapes onto fabric. They then turned these shapes into animals, objects, and imaginary creatures using fabric markers.
Nicole Dürr-Gerstler, an illustrator from Plauen known for her work in children’s books, guided the young participants. Her involvement was made possible through funding from the Cultural Education Network of the Vogtland-Zwickau region. Birgit Markert, the daycare’s director, later thanked Dürr-Gerstler for her commitment. The collaboration resulted in a lively, lasting artwork that now hangs in the daycare’s shared spaces.
The finished display remains on view at Sonnenkafer, showcasing the children’s creativity. The project also highlighted how local famous artists can enrich early education through hands-on activities. Funding from regional cultural programmes made the entire initiative possible.
