Family Home in Spain: Designer Transforms Stone House with Wood and Greenery
A 1960s Catalan house in Blanes, Costa Brava, has been transformed into a modern yet timeless family home. Designer Mar Torrentó led the renovation, blending traditional architecture with contemporary efficiency. The project focused on creating an open, inviting space while preserving the building’s original character.
The house originally featured brick-vaulted ceilings, a detail kept during the update. Torrentó reconfigured the layout to improve flow and functionality. The ground floor now includes an open living area with a central courtyard, kitchen, and dining space. This part of the home stays cooler due to its shaded position.
The kitchen combines oak cabinetry with green window frames and exposed support beams. Upstairs, the bedrooms were redesigned to include built-in wardrobes with pale lacquered doors. A bathroom and laundry room were also added to the upper floor. Temperature control was a key part of the renovation. Each floor now regulates heat independently, improving comfort without losing the home’s rustic charm. The design stays true to Catalan roots while incorporating minimalist, organic touches.
The finished home balances tradition and modernity. Its open layout, natural materials, and efficient climate control make it both stylish and practical. The renovation ensures the house remains a comfortable space for a growing family.
