In an unusual yet captivating turn of events, a more than three-meter-high horse head sculpture has been hoisted onto the balcony of Bremen's Theater am Goetheplatz. This intriguing piece, commissioned by the theatre, was created by the inmates of JVA Bremen.

The horse head sculpture, named after the circus horse character Negro Kaballo, is a central figure in the upcoming musical "Der 35. Mai", which is based on Erich Kästner's children's book "Der 35. Mai oder Konrad reitet in die Südsee". The musical will premiere on October 20th at 6 pm, and run until February 1st, 2025.

In addition to the horse head sculpture, an exhibition of further works by juvenile and adult inmates, inspired by the content of the play, will open in the foyer of the theater and run until November 25th, 2024. The exhibition includes sketches and ceramic sculptures, offering a glimpse into the creative minds of the inmates. Admission to the exhibition is free.

The workshops where the inmates create their works are supported by Mauern öffnen e.V., an organisation dedicated to providing opportunities for personal development and skill-building to inmates. Through their work in the workshops, the inmates learn to express their creativity, work concentratively, adhere to rules, and respect each other.

The musical's protagonist, Konrad, is having trouble writing an essay for school due to his strong math skills, adding an engaging human element to the story. The character Apotheker Ringelhuth is also important in the musical.

As the horse head sculpture dangles over the balcony, with its new legs featuring roller skate hooves, it serves as a striking symbol of the unique collaboration between the theater and the inmates, and a testament to the transformative power of art.

The horse head sculpture, named 'Negro Kaballo', is not only a central figure in the upcoming musical "Der 35. Mai", but also serves as a symbol of the home-and-garden workshops at JVA Bremen, where inmates create various lifestyle artworks inspired by the play, such as sketches and ceramic sculptures.
