Expert Tips: Selecting the Perfect Rug for Your Space

Selecting the perfect rug for your space can be a puzzle, according to Daniele Lora, Creative Director of CC-Tapis. Meanwhile, Nani Marquina, founder of her eponymous Spanish rug brand, suggests letting natural light guide your choice. From shapes to sizes and layering techniques, experts share insights to help you pick the ideal rug.

Lora advises using a rug to anchor furniture and harmonize with the room's aesthetic. Marquina suggests choosing a light or dark rug based on the amount of natural light a room receives. Rectangular rugs fit neatly under seating arrangements, beds, or dining tables, creating clear visual axes. Runners are particularly suited for hallways, kitchens, or transitional spaces. Round rugs, on the other hand, visually open up a space, lending softness and organic flow, perfect for reading nooks, lounges, or round tables.

Layering rugs in the same space can create a strikingly cohesive effect. Amin Ipektchi of Rugtales advises marking out the intended area with masking tape to get a realistic sense of scale. Rug size guidelines include ensuring all chairs remain on the rug for dining tables, aligning the rug with sofa edges or extending slightly beneath for sofas, placing coffee tables fully on the rug, and leaving at least a hand's width of space from walls in hallways. A rug can set the tone of a room, with light, room size, and color scheme playing crucial roles. Rugs shape a space’s atmosphere, establishing the room’s foundational tone or introducing depth and warmth.

From minimalist interiors benefiting from handcrafted rugs with character to vibrant spaces thriving with understated designs, the right rug can transform your space. Consider the puzzle of selecting a rug, from size and shape to color and layering, to create a harmonious and inviting atmosphere.
