Expert Tips for Early Indoor Sowing in Yakutia’s Harsh Climate
Ariana Malysheva, a laboratory technician at the Yakutsk Botanical Garden, has shared advice on early sowing for indoor cultivation. Her recommendations aim to help gardeners in Yakutia prepare for the region’s harsh climate. By starting seeds in February under controlled conditions, growers can ensure stronger plants before the outdoor season begins.
For tomatoes, Malysheva suggests sowing cold-resistant varieties such as Bychye Serdtce, Orliny Klyuv, and Verlioka. Other suitable types include Blagovest, Sibirsky Skorospely, and Bananye Nogi. These are known for adapting well to Yakutia’s short growing season.
Peppers and eggplants should also be started in February, particularly for heated greenhouses. Among sweet peppers, Bogatyr, California Wonder, and Lastochka are recommended. For hot peppers, varieties like Adzhika and Krasny Tolstyak perform best. The eggplant variety Mechta Ogorodnika is another strong choice for early sowing. Strawberries can be sown alongside garden strawberries to achieve an earlier harvest. From mid-February, remontant and runnerless varieties are ideal, as they produce multiple yields. This approach helps extend the growing period in Yakutia’s challenging environment.
Malysheva’s guidance focuses on varieties that thrive under controlled indoor conditions. By sowing in February, gardeners can give their plants a head start before transplanting outdoors. The selected crops are specifically suited to Yakutia’s climate, offering better chances for a successful harvest.
