Thousands Visit Upper Lusatian Framework Houses during Annual Open Day

The Upper Lusatia region, renowned for its timber-framed houses, attracted around 8,000 enthusiastic visitors during the "Day of the Open Framework House." Over ninety structures opened their doors on Sunday, granting an insight into the unique living conditions within these houses. Sven Rüdiger, project manager, noted that the visitors ranged from curious spectators to owners seeking advice on renovation and restoration.

Frame houses, a prevalent type of timber-framed housing in East Saxony and adjacent regions, owe their name to a beam supporting the upper floor or roof on the outer wall of the buildings. Over 6,000 such houses remain in the districts of Bautzen and Görlitz, the majority of which were built after 1650. They testify to the region's fine craftsmanship and diversity, as no two houses are identical. Constructed from natural materials like wood, clay, straw, and stone, these houses are consistent with today's ecological trends.

The "Upper Lusatian Framework House Road," which measures 112 kilometers, forms part of the "German Timber-Frame Road." This route follows a round tour through Ebersbach-Neugersdorf, Kottmar, Herrnhut, Oderwitz, Mittelherwigsdorf, Großschönau, and Seifhennersdorf.

This annual event, held on the last Sunday in May under the auspices of the Framework House Foundation, has the primary objective of offering individual expert advice to builders and homeowners. The foundation also mediates funding and specialist firms for the conversion and renovation of houses, providing their own funds while advocating for the preservation of traditional craft techniques and the use of historical building materials.

The Upper Lusatia region continues to cherish its framework houses as symbols of regional architecture and cultural heritage. These houses play a significant role in attracting tourists interested in exploring and learning about these historic homes.

The "Upper Lusatian Framework House Road" event, an annual tradition held under the patronage of the Framework House Foundation, not only provides individual expert advice to builders and homeowners but also offers insights into the community and employment policies regarding the preservation and renovation of these historic homes. With a focus on ecological living, this event attracts visitors interested in learning about lifestyles rooted in home-and-garden histories.
