Eutelsat Leads in Integrated GEO-LEO Operations, Tests 5G-Advanced NTN Connection
Eutelsat, a global leader in satellite communications, has made significant strides in its integrated GEO-LEO operations and connectivity technologies. The company, which boasts 34 geostationary and over 600 LEO satellites, is set to discuss its future strategy at an extraordinary general meeting on November 20.
Eutelsat's unique position as the world's first fully integrated GEO-LEO operator enables seamless connectivity across various networks. The company's Head of Telecom R&D, Daniele Finocchiaro, highlights this first watch advantage. Recently, Eutelsat successfully tested the 5G-Advanced Non-Terrestrial Network (NTN) connection using OneWeb LEO satellites, marking a significant milestone in satellite communication.
The trial, conducted at ESA’s European Space Research and Technology Centre, demonstrated conditional handover using 50 MHz of Ku-band spectrum. This addresses the challenge of traditional handover methods that often result in performance degradation and poor signal continuity. Eutelsat is the first satellite operator to test NTN broadband over Ku-band LEO satellites, further cementing its leadership in the industry.
Eutelsat's connectivity revenue grew by 15.7% to €439.6 million, with LEO revenue increasing by 61% to €54.1 million in Q1 2025-26. The company's innovative technology unlocks new markets for smartphones, automotive applications, and the Internet of Things. As it prepares for its extraordinary general meeting, Eutelsat is poised to set further strategic milestones in the satellite communication sector.
