EU launches €15 billion fund to transform water management by 2030

The European Union has pledged stronger support for water management across its member states. A new €15 billion fund from the European Investment Bank will back projects in the water sector. Officials stressed the urgent need for better water efficiency and sustainability.

During a recent meeting, Cypriot Agriculture Minister Maria Panayiotou highlighted the importance of cutting water use by 10% by 2030. She called for smarter water policies to protect supplies for the environment, health, and economy.

The EU's Environment Commissioner, Tzitzir Rosenburg, echoed these concerns. She warned that failing to invest in water now would cost far more later. Both officials agreed that secure water resources drive economic growth and public safety.

They also urged countries to work together on shared water challenges. The EU's funding rules have been adjusted to make it easier for states to finance water infrastructure. However, it remains unclear how many nations have concrete plans to access the new funds.

The €15 billion fund aims to boost water projects across Europe. Countries will need to develop clear strategies to benefit from the support. Officials have made it clear that action on water management cannot wait.
