Essen’s Haus Scheppen area to get €2M upgrade with green spaces and accessibility
Essen has approved plans to upgrade the area around Haus Scheppen. The project includes a redesigned forecourt, improved riverside path, and expanded parking facilities. Work is set to begin in 2026 after detailed designs are finalised by the end of 2025.
The committee for the environment, climate, and consumer protection gave the green light to the redesign. Key changes involve a new jetty with seating, extra greenery, and adjustments to parking lots P1 and P2. The riverside path will also be refurbished to maintain its historical look while ensuring barrier-free access.
Parking lot P1 will gain a barrier-free ramp linking it to the forecourt. Additional features include a new staircase, a viewing point, and digital displays showing available parking spaces. The total budget for these upgrades stands at around €2 million, with €340,000 allocated for planning costs.
Funding will come partly from Essen’s 'Public Green' budget, though further financial support options are still under review. Beyond these immediate changes, longer-term plans involve better infrastructure, family-friendly amenities, and improved connections to the Hespertalbahn after the IGA 2027 event.
Construction is expected to start in 2026 once the design phase wraps up. The upgrades will enhance accessibility, preserve historical elements, and modernise the area’s facilities. The city aims to complete the work in stages, ensuring minimal disruption to visitors and residents.
