Essen's 21st SauberZauber cleanup unites locals to collect 160 kg of trash in an hour
Essen's northern districts came together on March 3 for a community cleanup event, the 21st Essen SauberZauber in Altenessen-South. Around 50 people, including many children, joined the main event to tidy up the area around Treffpunkt Süd while promoting local unity and environmental awareness. The event was organised by Ehrenamt Agentur Essen e.V., with support from local groups like Hövelschule Family Primary School Center, the Altenessen District Office, and the Essen Waste Management Company (EBE). Participants spent an hour collecting litter, gathering roughly 160 kilograms of trash in total. At the EBE info van, volunteers learned about proper waste disposal and separation, and could also spin a wheel of fortune themed around cleanliness. A competition for the heaviest trash bag added excitement, with the winning bag tipping the scales at 18 kilograms. The two young winners received a €75 voucher for Allee-Center Essen-Altenessen. The organisers thanked the discretionary fund of the federal-state programme Social Cohesion—Shaping Neighborhood Life Together for financial backing. The 21st Essen SauberZauber will continue until March 15, encouraging further community involvement. The cleanup proved a success, with residents and organisations working side by side. Around 160 kilograms of waste were removed in just one hour, improving the local area. The event highlighted both environmental responsibility and strong community spirit in Essen's northern districts.
