In the bustling heart of Düsseldorf, plans are underway for a significant new project aimed at advancing environmental and climate protection. The proposed 4,000 square meter Environmental Center, a hub for research, education, and promotion of climate protection measures, is set to create more space for climate and environmental protection and sustainable development.

The city of Düsseldorf, recognising the need for bold decisions in the face of increasing environmental awareness and active citizen participation, is expected to fund this ambitious project. The project, presented by the Environmental Center Düsseldorf e.V., is seen as overdue and a much-needed addition to the city's green initiatives.

The new Environmental Center is planned to be an example of energy-efficient and ecological construction, serving as a roof for all environmental activists and those seeking information on sustainability. The building's motto, "Environment (belongs) in the Center", encapsulates this vision perfectly.

The implementation phase for the new center is starting, with two specific locations under consideration: Kirchplatz in Bilk and Caritas Platz near the state parliament. Each location is currently being examined in parallel, with the city and local entrepreneurs offering their support.

Düsseldorf, known for its identity as a green city, has already made strides in incorporating extensive plant life and architecture responsive to climate change. However, the proposed Environmental Center is a unique project in its focus on climate and environmental protection.

The new center aims to address the issues faced by the current center, which, despite being in existence since 1996 behind the former tram depot in Bilk, is not well-visited due to lack of funds and the building's need for renovation.

The EUREF Campus near Düsseldorf Airport, a site for modern infrastructure aimed at sustainable mobility and energy innovations, could be a relevant or potential site for environmental initiatives. However, no direct connection to this Environmental Center project has been indicated.

The estimated cost for the construction of the new Environmental Center is approximately 13 million euros. The idea of creating a new center has been under consideration for about ten years, with Herry Rubarth, deputy chairman of the Environmental Center Düsseldorf e.V., emphasising the importance of dialogue and understanding among stakeholders, particularly the population, for these decisions.

Dirk Jansen, NRW business manager of the German Environmental and Nature Conservation Association (BUND NRW), stresses the importance of a visible social role for environmental initiatives and nature conservation associations in the state capital. With the new Environmental Center, Düsseldorf is taking a significant step towards a greener and more sustainable future.

  1. Recognizing the need for an advanced hub in sustainable living, the city of Düsseldorf is funding the Environmental Center, a 4,000 square meter project, aiming to bridge the gap in environmental and climate protection through research, education, and promotion.
  2. In line with the city's green initiatives, the new Environmental Center, planned to be an energy-efficient and ecological building, is set to serve as a central rallying point for all environmental activists and those seeking information on sustainability, reflecting the motto "Environment (belongs) in the Center".
  3. As part of Düsseldorf's journey towards a greener and more sustainable future, the Environmental Center, with an estimated cost of 13 million euros, is poised to tackle the challenges faced by the current center, paving the way for substantial progress in environmental and climate science, and contributing to the city's growing identity as a green city.
