Emmendingen's seed library celebrates five years of green growth and community sharing
Emmendingen's seed library has marked five years of helping residents access their own plants. Run by the Stadtpflänzchen initiative, the project lets locals borrow up to five free seed packets at a time. Over the past half-decade, more than 150 different plant species have been shared with the community.
The scheme began in 2021 inside the city's public library. Its goal was simple: to encourage gardening and boost biodiversity. Since then, thousands of seed packets have been borrowed by residents.
This year, nearly 2,000 new varieties are on offer. Borrowers can also access gardening books and online guides for extra support. The library even accepts returned seeds and donations to keep the collection stocked.
A local seed producer supplies some packets at cost, reducing expenses. The initiative remains free for all participants, reinforcing its focus on sustainability and community engagement.
The seed library continues to grow, with over 150 plant types distributed since 2021. Residents can still borrow seeds, return harvests, and access gardening resources. The project's success relies on local partnerships and ongoing public involvement.
