yearning to pen an account centered on the sea, I stumbled upon the enigmatic vanishing of the Flannan Isles lighthouse keepers in 1900, a tale of puzzling disappearance from a secluded island outpost. The sea, with its captivating yet volatile allure, contrasts sharply with the lighthouse's consistent, reassuring beam and symbol of safety. Given the unstable nature of today's world, this dynamic presents a compelling backdrop for a writer. Capturing the sea's diverse aspects, from its tranquil mirror image during fine weather to the tumultuous drama of a fierce storm, was not enough for my novel, The Lamplighters. I aspired to bring the sea to life as a character, encompassing my protagonists' surroundings. They are immersed in water, filling their visual horizon for miles, creating a sense of spatial disorientation and uncertainty. My mission was to instill this sensation in readers, imbuing them with a sense of immersion so profound that they become one with the sea, vulnerable to its fickle alliances and unable to predict the tide's developments.

Readyto sail the stormy seas of narrative? The enigmatic vanishing of three lighthouse keepers from a forsaken isle piqued my interest like a hooked fish. Known as the Flannan Isles disappearance, it happened in the year 1900, and it seemed like the perfect setting for my literary vessel.

Marrying the raw, unpredictable beauty of the sea with the dependable, beacon-like lighthouse is a union steeped in symbolic gold, particularly in this day and age when the world can be as tempestuous as any swelling ocean.

Penning the sea is one thing, but I wanted more for my sea saga, "The Lamplighters." That sea should not merely mirror the moods of the weather, but instead, it should play an active role as a character, swelling with its own shifting emotions and allegiances.

My lighthouse guardians are prisoners of the sea. Their tower, the only sight they behold for miles, offers little sense of distance or scale. I aimed to conjure that feeling in readers - of being sucked under by the sea, of being tormented by its fickle promises and never knowing what lies ahead. To achieve this, I weaved multiple perspectives to give the story its ebb and flow, tugging readers towards one character's truth before dumping them in choppy waters as more revelations emerge.

In The Lamplighters, I have chosen my interpretation of what took place with those three keepers. But I believed it essential to allow room for readers to contest my tale. The charm of an authentic mystery lies not in a single definitive answer but in the countless possibilities that linger, unanswered, like the sea's eternal whispers.

Born in 1983, my humble abode was Northamptonshire.I toiled as a book editor before becoming a novelist. The sea and its captivating lighthouses inspired The Lamplighters, which has since been translated into over twenty languages. I now dwell in the South West with my family.

So, grab your compass, my friend, and set sail with me on this mystical voyage across the seas of The Lamplighters. Brace yourself for mystery, intrigue, and the mercurial embrace of the sea. Ahoy, matey! Let the adventure begin!

  1. Incorporating the allure of outdoor-living and home-and-garden aesthetics, I created the home of my protagonist, reflecting a lifestyle centered around the sea and lighthouse, serving as a backdrop to the narrative.
  2. As a prolific reader entrenched in social media literature, I found plenty of inspiration for character development from various books and entertainment media, shaping the intricate personalities of the lighthouse guardians.
  3. Drawing from my personal experience, I used my background in editing books to craft a compelling sea saga that would engage readers on multiple levels, infusing elements of mystery, entertainment, and outdoor-living, and sparking genuine discussions on social media platforms.
