Edwardian Home Transformed Into a Stylish Family Haven by Award-Winning Designers
A young couple moving out of London have transformed their first owned home—a three-floor Edwardian property—into a stylish family residence. Niki Schafer Interior Design led the project, blending the pair's contrasting tastes into a cohesive scheme that has since earned recognition in a prestigious competition.
The clients, relocating from the capital, wanted a home that balanced their differing preferences. The design team responded with a classic contemporary approach, mixing industrial touches with traditional elements. Pastel prints, bronze and brass accents, and solid wood furniture were used throughout to create warmth and character.
Downstairs, the centrepiece is a Shaker-style kitchen and dining area, merging modern functionality with timeless craftsmanship. Adjacent to this, a new library room was added, complete with built-in cabinets, integrated lighting, and a sliding ladder for easy access to higher shelves. Upstairs, the master bedroom now includes a walk-in wardrobe with floor-to-ceiling storage and an ensuite featuring a spacious shower enclosure. For the couple's daughter, the designers crafted a playful yet practical space. Her bedroom combines spotted and striped patterns—inspired by a Liberty bedspread—alongside adaptable storage to suit her growing needs. The project's thoughtful execution earned it a place on the shortlist for the SBID International Awards 2023 in the Residential House Under £1m category.
The completed home reflects both the couple's individual styles and their shared vision for family life. Its blend of classic and contemporary details has not only met their exacting standards but also gained industry recognition. The design now stands as a tailored solution for modern living in a historic property.
