Düsseldorf's "Great" event is not marked by civil unrest
The bustling city of Düsseldorf is set to host an exciting art exhibition, "The Great One", at the Kunstpalast over the next five weeks. This event, with a cost of 350,000 euros, will be partially funded by a municipal subsidy and the museum's hospitality.
The exhibition will feature an impressive 350 works by 185 participants, offering a diverse range of contemporary and modern art pieces. The event's second floor will dedicate another area specifically for "The Great One".
One of the exhibitors, Paula Knaps Loos, has designed tiles, wallpaper, and rugs for the event, aiming to create a total work of art. Her work, meant to belong to vibrant life, can be purchased, with a scarf titled "Rue Basse-du-Rempart" priced at 250 euros.
Classical painting and photography will also find ample room at "The Great One". Notable works include Emmanuel Mir's surreal scenes, displayed behind Elena Kolbasina's ceramic art, and Dirk Krüll's colourful sculpture made of stacked plastic chairs, the "Momobloc-Box".
The academy class of Cornelius Völker has installed their painting on the knotted foil used for transport at "The Great Düsseldorf Art Exhibition". Around 1300 artists from North Rhine-Westphalia applied for "The Great One" this year, with 177 being selected by the jury.
Each piece at "The Great One" is for sale, with the association taking a proud 40 percent. Notable artists such as Cihan Cakmak, with his self-portraits adorned with "letter-clothes" made by Gabriele Horndasch, and Birgit Jensen, whose enchanting yet unreal landscapes are created using photography, screen printing technique, and acrylic colors, will have their works on display and available for purchase.
Birgit Jensen received the 7,500 euro endowed artist's art prize and her work deserves special attention at "The Great One". For those with a taste for smaller works, the "Small Format" section offers pieces priced up to 1000 euros.
"The Great Düsseldorf Art Exhibition" will open on Saturday, June 28, and will be on display until August 3, with regular admission of 16 euros. Emmanuel Mir, a doctoral art historian, is the new chief of "The Great One" since 2024.
While specific details about the background, focus, and number of participants in this particular event were not found, it is known that public art exhibitions in Düsseldorf often relate to contemporary or modern art, sometimes linked with the Düsseldorf Academy of Art, which has a significant reputation in the arts and photography world.
