Duisburg’s Free Recycling Workshops Teach Kids and Families to Sort Waste Like Pros

Duisburg Public Utilities is offering free environmental education to schools, clubs, and families. The programmes teach waste separation, recycling, and sustainability through hands-on activities. Both children and adults can take part in workshops, cleanups, and interactive learning sessions.

The waste advisory team, known as Abfallberatung, runs two main school programmes. BesserTrenner (BetterSorters) targets pupils in grades 1–6, while AbfallKenner (WasteExperts) focuses on grades 5–6. Both teach proper waste sorting and recycling through practical lessons.

For younger children, the Daycare Adventure Program lets preschoolers explore recycling systems. A special activity book, Sorting Waste the Right Way, introduces the topic to kids as young as five. Schools and daycares can also borrow waste sorting games, educational kits, and reusable drink cups at no cost.

Community cleanups are another key offering. The utility provides materials and arranges waste collection in partnership with Offensive für ein sauberes Duisburg (Initiative for a Clean Duisburg). These campaigns can stand alone or be part of broader educational projects.

The advisory team also develops custom programmes for family events, holiday activities, or special formats. Their services extend beyond schools, supporting clubs and local teams in promoting sustainability.

All programmes and materials are free for Duisburg institutions. Schools, clubs, and families can contact the waste advisory team by email at [email protected] or by phone at +49 203 2833000. The initiative aims to build long-term awareness of waste reduction and recycling across the city.
