The iconic courtyard of Dresden Zwinger, a top tourist attraction and a crown jewel of Baroque architecture, is gearing up for a grand comeback by end-August. With the renovation at its final stretch, the major works have been completed, according to a spokesperson from Saxon State Property and Building Management (SIB).

A Timeless Masterpiece Worth Preserving
The Dresden Zwinger, boasting the imposing Crown Gate, is undoubtedly a significant Baroque structure and a symbol of the city. Commissioned by Elector Augustus the Strong in the early 18th century, architect Matthäus Daniel Pöppelmann and sculptor Balthasar Permoser built a grand complex of six pavilions, arches, and a long gallery around a symmetrical courtyard.
With more than 1.2 kilometers of masonry, 15,000 square meters of facade area, terraces, staircases, and 698 sculptures, a dedicated building office oversees its preservation meticulously. With an average annual investment of around 1.5 million euros, essential works mainly concentrated on new elevators and improved fire protection in the Glockenspiel Pavilion.
The Zwinger, unfortunately, suffered extensive damage during the 1945 Dresden bombings but has undergone several restoration campaigns since, with the most notable ones in the 1950s and 1960s.
A Fascinating Journey into Dresden's Past and Present
Since the 1990s, an estimated 222 million euros have been invested in the renovation and maintenance of the Dresden Zwinger ensemble, which includes the Semper Gallery and the area towards the Theater Square. Alongside the Semper Opera House, Frauenkirche, and Residenzschloss, it ranks among one of Dresden's prime tourist attractions, housing three museums of the State Art Collections.
