Minister awards prizes to allotment gardens - Dortmund’s Allotment Gardens Shine with Gold, Silver, and Bronze Awards

North Rhine-Westphalia's Agriculture Minister Silke Gorißen (CDU) honoured 14 allotment garden sites in Dortmund with awards. The state recognised the plots with seven silver and four bronze medals, along with gold awards for the best community gardens.

The jury in Aachen commended the winning plots for their use of historic plant varieties, near-natural structures, and resource-efficient cultivation methods. Notably, the community game in Wettringen stood out for its unique 'Sun of Life' bed design, traditional orchard meadow, educational programs, and holiday activities for children.

Several associations also supported the competition, offering special prizes of €1,000 each. The 'Zur Rose' site in Sendenhorst impressed the jury with its accessible communal spaces, shared raised beds, and insect-friendly planting.

Three associations received gold awards for their community gardens: the Aachen allotment association 'Soldatengasse', the 'Zur Rose' garden in Sendenhorst, and the community game 'Wettringen-Selbst-Bewusst' northwest of Münster. The awards recognise the dedication and creativity of allotment gardeners in North Rhine-Westphalia.
