Dorchester's Historic Kings Arms Hotel Reopens After Lavish £5M Revival
The IHG-managed Kings Arms, a historic hotel near you in Dorchester, has reopened its doors after an extensive refurbishment. This Grade II* listed building, known for its appearances in Thomas Hardy's novels, had been closed before its revival by the Stay Original Company in 2016.
The hotel first welcomed guests again in September 2020 following a £5 million renovation. Phase one of the project introduced a ground-floor bar, reception, restaurant, and 20 bedrooms. Further work is planned, with phase two set to add 14 more rooms in the new year.
The Kings Arms holds a rich history, having hosted figures such as Queen Victoria, King George IV, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. Its literary ties include mentions in Hardy's 'The Mayor of Casterbridge' and 'Far From The Madding Crowd'.
Ali Guttridge of Origin Interiors highlighted the smooth collaboration with the Stay Original Company during the refurbishment. The firm specialises in restoring historic coaching inns, with the Kings Arms joining four other transformed properties in its collection.
Rob Greacen, Managing Director of Stay Original Co., expressed hope that the hotel's reopening would boost Dorchester's prosperity and attract more visitors to the town.
The Kings Arms now stands as a restored landmark, blending its storied past with modern comforts. With further expansions on the horizon, the hotel aims to play a key role in Dorchester's cultural and economic future.
